Whole house figures for a three bedroom home commonly run from roughly $160 to $400. Cleaners charging by area tend to quote $4 to $8 per square metre, with a minimum call out between $120 and $200. Pet treatment usually adds $20 to $50 per room. End of lease work sits higher, often $210 to $525, because it includes more rooms and more stain work.

Three things move a price up: how much area there is, how bad the soiling is, and whether stairs or heavy furniture are involved. Stairs take longer than any room of the same size.

Carpet Steam Cleaning and Dry Cleaning in Altona
Steam cleaning is the common name for hot water extraction. Heated water and a cleaning solution go into the pile under pressure, then a vacuum head pulls the water and the loosened soil straight back out. Most of the dirt leaves the house in the waste tank.
Dry cleaning is really low moisture cleaning. A compound or a light solution lifts soil from the fibre, and the residue is vacuumed away. Far less water goes in, so the carpet is usable again sooner.
We use portable extraction equipment. Worth knowing why that matters in Altona. A large share of homes here are townhouses and two storey units. With a portable machine, the unit sits near the door and the hose runs to the top landing. Nothing gets dragged through the middle of your house, and there is no long hose feeding in from a van blocking a narrow street.

Nylon and polypropylene. Most Australian carpet laid since the 1990s. These handle hot water extraction well and generally clean up best that way.
Delicate and natural fibres. Sisal, jute, viscose and silk rugs move, stain and bleed dye when wet. These need testing first, and some should not be wet cleaned at all.
Loose laid rugs over timber. Water passing through can mark the boards underneath. We put a barrier down or move the rug.
Australia has a published standard for this work. AS/NZS 3733 covers the cleaning and maintenance of textile floor coverings, including fibre identification, testing before you start, and method selection. It is the reason a technician checks a care label and does a small test patch before touching the whole floor. No competitor page in this suburb mentions it.
Carpet makers also matter here. Many warranties ask for periodic professional cleaning by a hot water extraction method, and some ask you to keep the receipt. If your carpet is still under warranty, check the paperwork before choosing a method. The Carpet Institute of Australia also publishes free maintenance guidance that reflects the same standard.

Hot water extraction
Heated water and cleaning solution go into the pile under pressure and get pulled straight back out with the soil. This is the deepest clean available and the right call for heavy soiling, odour, and carpet that has not been touched in years. Most synthetic carpet in Altona homes suits it, and it is the method most carpet makers specify under warranty.
Low moisture and dry cleaning
Less water, faster drying, and the correct choice where moisture is a risk or the room has to be back in use quickly. It suits wool that would be at risk of shrinking, upper floor flats with poor airflow, shops that cannot close, and light maintenance cleans between deeper ones.

Fabric lounges and armchairs
Cleaned by hand tool with the fabric code checked first. Some upholstery is water safe, some needs solvent, and some cannot be wet cleaned at all. The tag under the cushion usually tells us. A fabric three seater collects more skin oil, food and sweat than any bedroom carpet in the house, and unlike carpet it sits at face height.
Mattresses
Dry soil, sweat and dust mite matter, done with extraction and left to dry fully before the bed is made up again. It matters most in homes where someone has asthma or hay fever.
Dining and office chairs
Fast to do and almost always worse than they look, especially seat pads under a table where nobody looks closely.

Rugs are their own job. A rug is not fixed down, it often has a fringe, and it is frequently made of something that carpet is not.

Before we start we check the label, test the dyes in a hidden corner, and look at the backing. Wool rugs, silk rugs and anything hand knotted get low moisture treatment. Fringes are cleaned by hand because a machine head will tear them.
Older rugs sometimes have dye that has already run once, before you owned it. We will point that out before cleaning rather than after.
Do You Have to Steam Clean Carpets Before Moving Out in Victoria?
Usually no. There are two situations where the answer changes.
Under section 63 of the Residential Tenancies Act 1997, a renter must keep the property reasonably clean. Reasonably clean is the standard. It does not mean professionally cleaned.
Regulation 12 of the Residential Tenancies Regulations 2021 sets out when a rental provider may require professional cleaning at the end of a tenancy. There are two limbs, and most websites only quote the first one.
First limb. The property was professionally cleaned immediately before the tenancy started, and the renter was told this at the start.
Second limb. Professional cleaning is needed to return the property to the same condition it was in immediately before the tenancy started, judged against the condition report and allowing for fair wear and tear.
That second limb is why a blanket claim that steam cleaning can never be required is wrong. If carpets went in clean and are coming out badly soiled, the second limb can apply.
This applies to rental agreements signed on or after 29 March 2021. Agreements signed before that date are treated differently.
Fair wear and tear is not damage. Carpet flattening in a hallway over four years is wear. A pet stain through to the underlay is not.
Section 27C of the Act covers how a bond claim is made and what has to be provided. From no later than 13 October 2026, changes under the Consumer Legislation Amendment Act 2025 tighten the evidence a rental provider must supply when claiming against a bond. Since June 2025, Rental Dispute Resolution Victoria has handled these disputes. The Portable Rental Bond Scheme starts 1 July 2026.

Sand, Salt and Coastal Wear on Altona Carpets
Altona Beach is a short walk from a lot of these homes. So is Altona Coastal Park, and the tracks around Cherry Lake and Truganina Park.
Sand is not soft. Under a microscope it is sharp grains of silica. It works down through the pile and settles at the base, near the backing. Every step then grinds those grains against the fibre. Over a few years, that is what dulls a carpet in the hallway while the same carpet under the bed still looks new.
Vacuuming takes the sand you can see. It does not reach the layer sitting at the bottom of the pile. Hot water extraction does, because water and suction reach the base of the fibre.
Salt behaves differently. It draws moisture from the air, which keeps the fibre slightly damp and makes it hold dirt more readily. Homes closest to The Esplanade and the foreshore notice this most.
Practical steps that help between cleans: a coarse doormat outside and a second one inside, shoes off at the door, and slow vacuuming over entry areas. Slow matters more than powerful. The head needs time to work sand back up.
Altona Beach and the foreshore

Cherry Lake and the park tracks
Wet paws and muddy shoes after a lap of Cherry Lake, Altona Coastal Park or Truganina Park. Organic soil and lake silt bind to fibre and hold odour once they dry in.
Salt in the air
Salt draws moisture out of the air, which keeps fibre slightly damp so it grabs and holds dirt more readily. Homes closest to The Esplanade and the foreshore notice this most.
Stairs and landings
With a high share of townhouses in 3018, stairs take concentrated traffic in a small area. The nosing on each step wears first, and the landing is usually the dirtiest square metre in the house.
Traffic lanes
Whatever the source, it lands in the same places. Inside the front door, down the hallway, the path from kitchen to lounge, and the strip in front of the couch. Those lanes carry most of the wear, which is why we treat them separately rather than passing evenly over the whole floor.
Stairs, Landings and Townhouse Carpets in Altona
In the 2021 Census, 30.1 per cent of occupied homes in Altona were semi detached, terrace or townhouse. Across Victoria the figure was 13.9 per cent. Separate houses made up 61.1 per cent here against 73.4 per cent statewide, and 46.5 per cent of homes had three bedrooms.
Plainly put, Altona has a lot of narrow, tall homes.
That changes the job. Stairs carry all the foot traffic of a hallway concentrated into a small area, and the front edge of each step, the nosing, wears first. Stairs are also slower to clean than flat floors. A staircase can take as long as a bedroom.
This is a common billing argument in our industry. A quote covers three bedrooms, the cleaner arrives, and stairs are suddenly extra. Ask any cleaner, including us, to confirm in writing whether stairs are counted and how.
Landings are the other spot. They are usually the dirtiest square metre in a two storey home because everyone pivots on the same patch.
Drying
How Long Do Carpets Take to Dry?
After hot water extraction, expect four to eight hours in most Altona homes. Low moisture cleaning is usually one to two hours.
Three things change that number.
Airflow. Open windows and a fan make the biggest difference of anything you can do.
Humidity. A grey, still winter day near the bay dries much slower than a dry, breezy one.
Pile depth. Thick, plush carpet holds more water than a low commercial pile.
You can walk on it before it is fully dry. Clean socks or clean shoes are fine. Avoid moving heavy furniture back onto damp carpet, because timber and metal feet can mark it.
This matters more here than in most suburbs. In the 2021 Census, 35.7 per cent of employed Altona residents worked from home, against 25.7 per cent for Victoria.
