Having your carpets professionally cleaned in Melbourne typically costs $25 to $75 per room, with most homes paying around $45 to $50 a room. A 3 bedroom home usually runs $150 to $370. This guide breaks down real Melbourne prices, explains steam vs dry cleaning in plain terms, and shows you how to spot a bait quote before you book.

The Short Answer: Melbourne Price Table
These figures reflect published 2026 price lists from Melbourne carpet cleaners:
- 1 room: $25 to $75 (most pay around $45 to $50)
- 3 bedroom home: $150 to $370
- 4 bedroom home: $200 to $470
- Stain treatment: $21 to $52 per stain
- Deodorising: $16 to $42 per room
- Rug clean: $42 to $125
Prices move with size, condition and what you add on. The rest of this guide shows what sits behind the numbers.
What Changes the Price?
Size and room count. More rooms, more time. Stairs add labour.
Condition. Heavy traffic lanes, stains and pet mess take longer. A well kept carpet costs less than a neglected one.
Carpet type. Wool needs a gentler hand than synthetic. A good cleaner will ask what your carpet is made of before quoting.
Extras. Stain treatment, deodorising, pet odour treatment and carpet protection are priced on top. Worth it when you need them, skipped when you do not.
Access. City apartments with tricky parking or long carries can add a surcharge. Ask upfront.
Steam Cleaning vs Dry Cleaning vs Encapsulation: Which Do You Need?
Steam cleaning (hot water extraction). Hot water and detergent are sprayed into the carpet, then vacuumed straight back out. Despite the name, it is not actually steam. This is the deepest clean and the one most Melbourne leases require for bond cleans. Drying takes 4 to 8 hours, or 8 to 12 hours in a Melbourne winter. It uses 10 to 50 litres of water per room.
Dry cleaning. Low moisture compounds are worked into the carpet and vacuumed out. You can walk on it in 1 to 2 hours. Best for wool carpet, maintenance cleans and offices that cannot close for a day.
Encapsulation. Polymer crystals trap the dirt, dry, then get vacuumed away. Dry in 30 minutes to 2 hours. Common in commercial work. Almost no Melbourne cleaner explains this method on their website. Now you know it exists, and you can ask for it by name.
For most homes, steam gives the best result. For wool or for a quick turnaround, dry cleaning is the safer pick.
How Long Until You Can Walk on It?
- Steam cleaning: 4 to 8 hours (up to 12 in winter)
- Dry cleaning: 1 to 2 hours
- Encapsulation: 30 minutes to 2 hours
Open windows and run fans to speed things up. If a cleaner tells you a steam cleaned carpet will be dry in an hour, they are cutting corners or misnaming the method.
Extras Worth Paying For (and the Ones That Are Not)
Worth it when you need them:
- Stain treatment ($21 to $52 per stain): for red wine, coffee, pet accidents. Set stains may lighten rather than vanish. A straight cleaner tells you this before starting.
- Pet odour treatment: enzyme based, actually breaks down the smell rather than masking it.
- Sanitising: sensible for allergy sufferers and medical households.
- Carpet protection: a coating that buys you time to blot future spills.
Red flags:
- A “deep scrub” or “premium treatment” invented on arrival
- Per step stair charges sprung on the day
- Deodorising added without asking
- Any extra you did not agree to in the written quote
How to Spot a Bait Quote
The classic Melbourne bait quote looks like this: “$35 per room*”. The asterisk does the heavy lifting. Minimum room counts. The living room counts as two rooms. Hallways cost extra. Stairs are per step. Then on arrival: “this carpet needs the premium treatment, that’s another $120.”
A good quote has:
- A fixed written price before the job
- Exactly what is included, listed
- Drying time stated
- An ABN on the invoice (you need this for bond and tax records)
If the price can only be confirmed “once we see it”, get a second quote. Melbourne renters report this pattern again and again: the cheap quote is never the cheap job.
What Melbourne Renters Actually Pay
Public discussions tell the real story:
- Airtasker jobs across Victoria: around $50 for one room, $100 for a steam clean, $30 for a single rug, $350 to $400 for a whole house end of lease clean including carpets.
- On Whirlpool, a quote “over $100” for a small 2 bedroom unit felt like a rip off next to “$60 three years ago”. Prices have moved. That is normal.
- One renter hired a $60 steamer from Coles, did it themselves, and got the full bond back. DIY can work for a small place. For large areas or set stains, the professional gear earns its keep.
- The most repeated complaint: carpets left wet for 24 hours or more, then smelling musty. That points to cheap portable machines, not truck mounted gear. Ask what equipment they use.
Prices Across Melbourne: Suburbs We Service
OneDrop FM is based in Taylors Lakes, near Watergardens. Most of our carpet jobs fall in these areas:
- Carpet cleaning Reservoir: from Edwardes Street to Keon Park station. Brick homes with original carpet are common here, and they respond well to steam cleaning.
- Carpet cleaning Brunswick: Sydney Road terraces and townhouses. High turnover rentals, so end of lease carpet cleans are the main game.
- Carpet cleaning Bayswater: family homes along Mountain Highway. Pet stains and traffic lanes are the usual brief.
- Carpet cleaning Epping: near Pacific Epping and the new estates. New carpet, first professional clean.
- Carpet cleaning Altona: from Pier Street to the beach. Sand worked into carpet is the local specialty problem.
- Carpet cleaning Melbourne CBD: apartment towers where access and parking shape the quote. Book the loading dock before we arrive and the job runs smooth.
We also do carpet steam cleaning across Dandenong and Port Melbourne, including end of lease jobs where the lease demands a receipt.
Rugs, Drying and Repairs: What About the Rest?
Rugs. Rugs need different handling to wall to wall carpet. Persian, wool and shag rugs each get their own method. We clean rugs onsite across Reservoir and Brunswick, priced $42 to $125 depending on size and fibre.
Wet carpet drying. Floods, leaks, and carpets left wet by cheap portables. Our onsite carpet drying service in Melbourne pulls the moisture out with commercial air movers and dehumidifiers, then checks for mould risk. If your carpet has been wet more than 48 hours, call fast. Mould does not wait.
Carpet repair. Straight talk: most cleaners do not re-stretch, patch or re-seam carpet, and neither do we. If you need carpet repair in Reservoir, Altona or anywhere else, call a carpet layer. What we will do is tell you honestly when a stain will not come out, before you pay us to try.
Frequently Asked Questions
Steam or dry: which is better?
Steam cleans deeper and suits most homes. Dry is faster and safer for wool. For a bond clean where the lease demands a receipt, steam is the standard.
How long does it take to dry?
4 to 8 hours for steam cleaning, up to 12 in a Melbourne winter. Dry cleaning: 1 to 2 hours.
Do I need to move furniture?
Move small items and breakables. We shift lounges and beds and put them back. Tell us about heavy pieces when you book.
Will it remove pet stains and smell?
Fresh stains, usually yes. Old set stains may lighten rather than vanish. Pet odour needs enzyme treatment, not just a clean. Ask for it by name.
Is it safe for wool carpet?
Yes, with the right method and heat. Tell your cleaner it is wool before they quote. Dry cleaning is the conservative choice.
Do I need to be home?
No. Most of our jobs run while people are at work. We just need access and parking sorted.
